Experience

BRETTSCHNEIDER Fernreisebedarf solely focuses on mosquito control. It all began over 30 years ago with the mosquito net that Renate Brettschneider – to this day the company’s managing director – produced on her sewing machine, spurred on by a love of travel to faraway places. The idea took off, a company was founded and was soon offering other net designs and further mosquito control products.
Today countless globetrotters place their trust in Brettschneider’s mosquito net expertise. This enables them to concentrate on the reason why they travel, which is to get to know different countries and the people who live in them, gaining an understanding of the cultures involved in the process.

Winged disease transmitters

But why do mosquitoes bite in the first place? In order to reproduce, as so often the case in nature. Female mosquitoes need blood to mature their eggs, and they have a complex system of sensors to help them find it. Some of these sensors respond to temperature differences on the surface of the skin, enabling them to determine the location of blood vessels; others detect movement in the capillaries themselves – i.e. the pulse of their „prey“ – to find the best ones for tapping. The female mosquito then pierces the skin with its proboscis and draws blood in a process that particularly in risk areas can transmit lifethreatening diseases like yellow fever and malaria.

Mosquito nets for best-possible protection

Mosquito nets, either in the form of bed nets or patio canopies, form a physical barrier to keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay, thus creating a protective zone for restful, bitefree nights and leisure hours out on terrace or balcony. Each BRETTSCHNEIDER mosquito net is a quality product based on a well-thought-out concept that reliably keeps biting insects at bay.
In areas prone to mosquito-borne diseases, we recommend use of our fully-enclosed HOLIDAY series nets, which are just lifted to enter. Tiny insects such as sand flies and midges can be kept at bay with our SPECIAL FINE MESH nets.

All-round mosquito repellents for daytime use

Mosquito repellents make it possible to pursue outdoor activities and sports in mosquitoprone areas without the fear of getting bitten. BRETTSCHNEIDER carries the full range of JAICO repellents, which have gained the Belgian specialist awards at the International Exhibition of Inventions in both Brussels and Geneva and at other events. Our programme includes JAICO Natural, made of natural ingredients, and JAICO Anti-Mosquito Milk with DEET. These products affect orientation in mosquitos, thus deterring them from biting.

Info Box: What is DEET? DEET, short for diethyltoluamide, was developed in 1946 by the U.S. Army and soon proved effective at warding off biting insects. In 1957 the active ingredient was adopted for public-use products.  All DEET-containing JAICO products are fully registered in Europe. Such registration proves that the preparations are safe ‚if used as directed‘ and that they effectively protect users for the time specified on the product.

The right mosquito repellent – a matter of objective criteria and personal choice

It is our aim to help people ward off disease-transmitting insects with the help of mosquito nets. We only advocate use of insecticides when extreme circumstances are concerned; even if insects can be a real nuisance, they play an important role in the overall ecosystem. Accordingly we encourage mosquito and insect control appropriate to the risk involved and environmental concerns. In other words, mosquito control is not just a question of objective criteria but also of personal choice.

We wish you peaceful nights and carefree days without troublesome insects to disturb your sleep or your outdoor activities
